Jacksonville is already an affordable city in Florida. But to enjoy your time here, you don’t even need to get out your wallet, as there are many exciting and freeways to explore the city. Here are 10 to get you started.
Leave only footprints at the beach
As a Floridian coastal resort, Jacksonville naturally has an incredible beach, ideal for surfing, swimming, and sunbathing. Jacksonville Beach is 4.1 miles long and has multiple lifeguards on duty from 9 am. to 7 pm. Please only enter the water during this time and stay between the safety flags.
While at the beach get ocean smart, by requesting free Ocean Safety education. It is for anybody and everybody – individuals, groups, schools, or your family.
Explore Jacksonville’s Public Parks
Jacksonville has the biggest urban park system in the United States, so hours and hours can be spent navigating yourself around them all. The weather in Florida is perfect for outdoor excursions, so put on your comfy shoes, go for a walk, and admire the greenery. Start with the Metropolitan Park on Gator Bowl Boulevard, then explore Confederate Park, Hubbard Street and Treaty Oak on Prudential Drive.
Learn the 7 steps to brewing beer
The self-guided tour around the Budweiser Brewery is free, during office hours. Those over 21 with be offered a complimentary beer sampling.
Tour the Jacksonville Fire Museum
For a 2-hour activity, head to the Catherine Street fire station, to learn about the history of the fire service, not just in Jacksonville all of Florida. This fascinating and free Jacksonville Fire Museum will be open from Tuesdays through Saturdays from 9 am to 4 pm, after the fall of 2018. Discover what happened during the Great Fire of 1901 and admire the fully restored 1902 La France horse-drawn fire engine.
Jacksonville Public Library
Escape the midday sun with a visit to the Jacksonville Public Library. Throughout the year the Jacksonville libraries hold multiple free events. They range from children’s fun storytelling, an introduction to healthy eating, ukulele lessons and a workshop that combines a love of music, art, and movies. But at the end of the day, sometimes it is great to just find a seat and start reading a great book.
Take a Stroll on the Downtown Art Walk
Love art and walking? Combine the two activities with a visit to the Downtown Art Walk. You can walk, catch the bus or the high skyway. If you have a car, it’s free to park after 6 pm. Discover all that is happening in the area online, just click here.
Visit the Cummer Museum
The Cummer Museum is located at 829 Riverside Avenue, is free to enter on Tuesdays between the hours of 4 pm and 9 pm. Admire the artist’s paintings and sculptures at your leisure, then before you leave step outside to the Cummer Gardens.
Walk around the Riverside Arts Market
Every Saturday small local businesses, including artists, bakers, craftsman, and farmers at the Riverside Arts Market. It’s free to walk around and admire the local produce between 10 am until 3 pm. Who knows what you will discover?!
Visit the Kingsley Plantation
Walk around the grounds of the oldest plantation house in Florida, Kingsley Plantation. You can explore the slave quarters, barn, plantation house, and much more. Admission is free and it’s open 7 days a week, 9 am-5 pm.
Jacksonville Farmers Market
If you wake up early and can’t get back to sleep, then head over to the local farmers market at 1810 West Beaver Street and taste some delicious free sample treats. It is open every day from dawn until 6 pm.
