While the area now known as Sunny Isles Beach has been a tourist destination since the Florida land boom of the 1920s, development in Sunny Isles Beach did not accelerate until after World War II, when single family housing was established in nearby Golden Shores. During the 1950′s and 1960′s more than 30 motels were built along the main thoroughfare along Collins Avenue. These structures included the Ocean Palm; the first two-story motel in the U.S. The residents of Sunny Isles Beach finally voted to incorporate the community into its own municipality in 1997.

Today, the post-World World II era hotels, motels and motor lodges in what used to be called “Motel Row” are now being torn down to accommodate luxury residential condominium construction. According to the Sunny Isles Beach home page, “Much of the residential construction is not for year-round occupancy, however the statistics show a steady growth in young families who desire to be near the ocean.”
