Tampa: Suncoast City by the Bay

Tampa is a sleek, modern city that hasn’t forgotten its unique history. As one of the fastest growing urban areas in Florida, Tampa combines the natural beauty of a seaside community with the cultural offerings of a major metropolitan area.

One of the main attractions for Tampa tourists is Busch Gardens Africa. Part theme park, part zoo, Busch Gardens has been educating and entertaining families since 1959. Busch Gardens boasts several high flying roller coasters, with names like Python and Scorpion, and the new SheiKra thrill ride is North America’s first and only dive roller coaster. The park also offers a variety of musical shows and a safari experience. Adventure Island, a Key West-themed water park, is adjacent to Busch Gardens.

For many visitors, Tampa’s museums are just as thrilling as the local theme parks. The Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) is the largest science center in the southeastern United States. In addition to hundreds of interactive exhibits, MOSI features an IMAX domed screen and a planetarium. Some of the exhibits have a uniquely Floridian touch, such as a hurricane room that enables visitors to experience the impact of 74 mph winds.

The Florida Aquarium is another fascinating interactive museum. Walking through a tunnel in the huge aquarium tank, you won’t need SCUBA gear to feel as if you are underwater amongst the sharks and stingrays. The Aquarium offers regularly scheduled underwater presentations, kid-friendly touch tanks, and a 90-minute cruise around Tampa Bay.

For all of its modern attractions, Tampa has not lost sight of its past. Ybor City is a national historic landmark district that blends Tampa’s rich cultural history with a vibrant nightlife. At the turn of the twentieth century, Ybor City was the heart of the world’s cigar industry, populated by Cuban, Italian, and Spanish immigrants. Workers lived in shotgun houses that are still standing today, and many of the older brick buildings have been converted into trendy restaurants and nightclubs. At the center of this district, Centro Ybor offers shopping, dining, a comedy club and a 20 screen movie theater.

Another one of the benefits of visiting a well-established city like Tampa is year-round access to professional sports teams. There is Devil Rays baseball in the spring and summer, Buccaneers football in the fall, and Tampa Bay Lightning hockey for winter sports fans (NBA fans can always attend an Orlando Magic game, less than two hours away via I-4).

Tampa’s proximity to the Gulf of Mexico means that the beach is only minutes away. A quick trip across Tampa Bay via the Courtney Campbell Causeway takes you towards Clearwater Beach, and the Howard Frankland Bridge connects you with St. Petersburg and the outlying areas along the Suncoast. If you want to enjoy Florida’s natural beauty alongside its numerous cultural offerings, Tampa has it all.
