In September of 1565, Aviles landed on the shores here and began the founding of a settlement that would be called St Augustine.
St Augustine is built on the site of a Native American village and near where Ponce de Leon landed as he searched for his Fountain of Youth.
St. Augustine has been continuously lived in since its founding, making it the oldest city in the United States.
In the latter part of the 1800's St. Augustine began to be a mecca for tourists when it came under the watchful eye of an oil tycoon, Henry Flagler.
Since then, restoration of the old colonial structures and buildings have been undertaken, making them nearly what they were originally, and a great deal of effort has been put into the buildings and the city with an eye to preserving St. Augustine’s history and heritage.
If you are a history buff, St Augustine attractions for you will be the 36 original structures, or the 40 more which have been reconstructed to permit you to view a living history. Aside from those offerings, St. Augustine provides the Colonial Spanish Quarter as well as the Castillo de San Marcos, which is a fort from the 17th century that was built to help them stave off enemy attacks.
Aside from history, St Augustine holds other attractions, among them one of the first oceanariums in the US, as well as fine dining and a wonderful shopping experience that takes place on a brick lined "walkers only" shopping district.
